SIGNS TO SUGGEST WHY YOUR WEBSITE MAY NEED A REDESIGN
5 Signs Your Website Isn’t Earning Its Keep
You’ve got a website. It’s got nice photos, your logo’s in the right place, and someone (maybe even you) spent a fair few hours getting it just so.
But here’s the question we ask every new client at Toucan52: is it actually working for you?
If you’ve ended up here because you’ve been searching things like “is my website working” or “signs your website needs a redesign” — you’re already halfway to fixing it, because you’ve noticed something’s off. That instinct is usually right.
Because your website isn’t just a digital business card. It’s not something you build once and can then forget about while it quietly sits there looking presentable. A good website works while you sleep — answering questions, building trust, and nudging the right people towards getting in touch.
If yours isn’t doing that, it’s not earning its keep. Here are five signs it might be time for a rethink.
1. People visit on your website and then leave - fast.
How quickly people leave your website after landing on it is called your bounce rate. If your bounce rate is high (or you just have a gut feeling people aren’t hanging around), the usual explanation is your homepage not answering the only question a visitor actually has in those first few seconds: “Am I in the right place?”
If it takes more than a glance to work out who you help and what you do, most visitors won’t stay to find out. They’ll just leave.
The fix: your headline and the first thing visitors see should say, in plain English, who you help and what result you get them — not a clever tagline that means nothing until someone already knows your business.
2. Your website traffic is great, your inbox isn't.
This one catches a lot of small business owners out. You check your analytics, see steady visitor numbers, and think “great, it’s working.” Then you look at actual enquiries and there really isn’t much going on.
Traffic is not the goal. Traffic is the opportunity. If people are arriving and nothing is happening once they get there, you’ve got a leaky bucket, not a converting website.
The fix: track enquiries and bookings, not just visits. A website that gets fewer visitors but converts more of them is doing a better job than one that gets thousands of visitors with no action.
3. There is no obvious next step.
It’s a good idea to sit and have a proper, honest look at your website. On every page, ask yourself: what do I want someone to do right now?
If the answer isn’t obvious — a clear button, a clear phone number, a clear “book a call” — you’re leaving it up to chance whether someone takes action. And people rarely do the work of figuring out what to do next themselves. They just leave. On a personal note here, try not to overdo the ‘calls to action’, it can feel a tad desperate!
The fix: every page needs one clear, unmissable next step. Not five options. One.
4. Your website hasn't been updated in over a year.
Websites that go untouched start to quietly work against you. Out-of-date testimonials, old team photos, services you no longer offer, a blog that stopped in 2023 — all of it tells visitors (and Google) that your business might not be as active as it claims. We often refer to it as gathering dust here at Toucan52, and we all need to dust our shelves from time to time.
The fix: you don’t need a full rebuild every year. Small, regular updates — fresh testimonials, a new case study, updated pricing or services — keep your site feeling current and give search engines a reason to keep ranking you.
5. It doesn't sound like you.
This is the one that many people underestimate. If your website reads like it was written by a committee (or, increasingly, entirely by AI with no edit afterwards), it can feel really strange, and frankly impersonal. Visitors can tell the difference between what’s real and what’s not, even if they can’t quite say why.
The fix: your website should sound like the person people would actually meet if they picked up the phone. Warmth, personality and specifics build more trust than polished-but-generic copy ever will.
FAQ’S
We answer a few questions below, however, if you’d like more information on what your site is doing for you, or how to update it, please get in touch.

How do I know if my website needs a redesign?
If you are looking for signs your website needs a redesign, look at the items above first — high bounce rates, decent traffic with few enquiries, and no clear next step are the three biggest tells. If two or more apply, a redesign (or a targeted refresh) is worth exploring.

Does a website redesign always mean starting from scratch?
No. Most sites just need some strategic changes — a clearer homepage headline, stronger calls to action, or updated content — rather than a full rebuild. A full redesign is usually only necessary if the underlying platform is outdated or broken.

How much does a website redesign cost?
It depends entirely on what’s required. A homepage refresh is a very different job to a full multi-page rebuild with e-commerce or membership features. Book a free call and we’ll give you an honest, specific answer for your situation.
So, is your website earning it's keep?
If you read through that list and recognised your own site in one or two (or all five) — you’re really not alone. Most small business websites drift this way over time, simply because there’s always something more urgent to deal with than the website.
The good news: none of these require starting from scratch. Small, targeted changes to what’s already there can make a real difference to how many enquiries your website brings in.

TOUCAN TESTIMONIALS
“Kerry-Anne at Toucan Web Design & Marketing has been an absolute lifesaver, game changer, and all-round wonderful human being.
My old website wasn’t performing well, and my SEO was falling behind compared to other decorating companies.
After sending her some photos and information it didn’t take long before she produced the best-looking website I’ve ever seen. Once it went live, she worked her magic on the SEO – and now my business consistently appears at the top of Google. The increase in enquiries and workload has been incredible!”
